Day 4: Peterborough – Broken Hill (292km, 2903km total)

My motel room was very comfortable and looked out at the back of the Peterborough Hotel - an old stone building. The back of the building looks much better than the front because from the street it looks like dump. It did however serve an excellent T-bone steak last night, great value at $20.

Neither of the two cafes on the main street of Peterborough are open for breakfast – and there’s not many people around. The whole town has a worn out look to it with quite a few closed up stores. So, it’s a quick instant coffee in the motel room then hit the road.

A lazy day’s ride to Broken Hill. The coolest day so far at 17C. The skies are still grey but there’s no rain or drizzle – yay! The road alternates between meandering sections and straights, good surface and light traffic. Most of the way it runs alongside the railway tracks occasionally swapping sides.

There are quite a few floodways marked but despite the rain of the last few days they’re all dry. The motorcycle & sidecar combination is more popular than I’d ever have thought: I passed one on the way Olary, and met 6 others at different points along the way.

Stopped off at the Olary Hotel for ‘brunch’: anywhere that has the remains of a Jawa on the back of a truck as a 'Welcom' sign has to be worth a look. It was probably a busy joint in the hayday of the railway that runs in front of it but not so today - I’m the only customer. I was greeted by Lilly the terrier sitting on a couch under a Casey Stoner poster and a cat sitting at each end of the bar! A mountain of bacon, eggs & coffee consumed, it’s back on the road.

Between the breakfast & lunch rush?

Encountered a new road hazard between Olary and Broken Hill – wild goats, grazing away near the roadside.

All up it’s a good road for touring with some varying landscape including some hills in the distance that you never seems to get closer to!
